Marilyn is Adjunct Faculty in the M.A. Counseling Psychology Program, and serves as the representative to Academic Senate. She teaches Community Mental Health and Clinical Practice I, II, III, IV, V, VI. She has been in private practice since 2004, and integrates depth and somatic approaches in her work with clients, and supervision of interns. Marilyn spent 15 years providing direct care, supervision, and training to staff serving children and families with severe mental illness in Pasadena. This experience gave her a deep understanding of how chronic early trauma and attachment wounding affects the body as well as the mind. This inspired her to pursue nonverbal and somatic approaches to psychotherapy, such as Sandplay, mindfulness, movement, and voice to increase awareness of the body and nonverbal processes. She has taken several intensives in Marion Woodman’s BodySoul Rhythms, and recently completed the Level 1 training in Sensorimotor Psychotherapy. Working in county funded agencies also helped her understand ways in which therapists trained in Depth Psychology can work within and contribute to the predominantly Cognitive-Behavioral orientation of public mental health. Before entering psychology, Marilyn earned a B.A. in British Literature and Creative Writing, and an M.A. in Theatre Arts from California State University, Fullerton, where she taught Theatre courses for 9 years. Her creative work includes writing poetry, personal essays, and singing. Personal interests that inform her academic and clinical work include Buddhism from the Shambhala tradition, Integral Philosophy, and Depth Astrology. She is a Clinical Fellow of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy, Clinical Member of the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists, the Santa Barbara Chapter of CAMFT, and the American Association of University Professors.
